Beckley, W.VA.- Central Michigan came back with three runs in the top of the ninth inning to beat Marshall, 10-8. Redshirt Freshman Neal Jacobs led the Chippewas with three RBIs and three hits.
Trailing 8-7 heading to the ninth inning, sophomore Nick Regnier singled to short with one out. He quickly stole second, and then advanced to third on a single by Jordan Adams. With Zack Fields at the plate, a throwing error by Matt Margaritonda allowed two runs to score, giving Central Michigan (9-9) a one run lead, 9-8. With two outs and a runner on third, Jacobs hit a single up the middle to score Fields.
Sophomore Matt Trowbridge came in to close the game for the Chippewas, striking out two batters and forcing a ground out for the save.
Central Michigan jumped on the scoreboard first, putting up one run in the first inning. Back-to-back hit batters put runners on first and second with two outs for Fields. He drove in Nick Regnier with a double down the left field line.
The Thundering Herd (7-10) answered in the bottom of the inning though, thanks to a homerun by Gray Stafford over the left field wall, tying the game 1-1.
The Chippewas scored three runs in the second inning to grab a 4-1 lead. The inning started with a single by Jacobs to centerfield, which was followed by Alec Ornelas' double to left, advancing Jacobs to third. Jacobs came in to score on a ground out to short by Oliver. Freshman Logan Regnier brought Ornelas home with a double to left center, putting Central Michigan up 3-1. Sophomore Pat MacKenzie concluded the scoring in the inning with a single to score Logan Regnier.
Ornelas hit his second double of the day in the fourth inning, setting up an RBI fielder’s choice by Logan Regnier to extend the Chippewas’ lead to 5-1.
Marshall responded once again though, scoring five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Alfredo Brito got the rally started for the Thundering Herd with a single to right center. After a strikeout by Chase Vogelbach, Kirkwood singled to advance Brito to second. The bases were loaded with one out after Aaron Bossi reached on a walk, and a run scored on an error on fielder’s choice play. With the bases still loaded, Isaac Ballou laid down a bunt to score Bossi, cutting Central Michigan’s lead to 5-3. Andrew Dundon kept Marshall’s rally alive with an RBI single, and was followed by a ground out RBI to score to score Ballou.
Down 6-5, the Chippewas retook the lead with two more runs in the seventh. MacKenzie opened the inning with a walk, and advanced to second on a single by Nick Regnier. Sophomore Cody Leichman loaded the bases for Central Michigan looking at ball four, and a single by Jacobs brought two in to score.
Marshall wouldn’t go away though, answering in the bottom of the eighth inning. With runners on second and third, Vogelbach hit a triple to right field to put the Thundering Herd up 8-7.
Jacobs finished the game 3-5 at the plate and with three RBIs. Logan Regnier added two RBIs off of one hit. Nick Regnier scored three runs and went 2-4 at the plate. Senior Pat Kaminska started for the Chippewas, pitching 6.0 innings and gave up four earned runs. Redshirt freshman Blake Louscher pitched 1.1 innings and gave up two earned runs. Trowbridge earned the save, striking out two of the final three batters.
Stafford and Vogelbach each finished with two RBIs and one hit. Sergio Leon, Ballou, and Dundon contributed one RBI each to the Thundering Herd’s cause. Terrence Moore pitched 5.1 innings, giving up six hits and five earned runs. Ryan Hopkins pitched 1.2 innings and gave up two runs. Josh King pitched 1.0 innings and struck out one batter. Margaritonda gave up three hits and three runs in the final inning.
Central Michigan will be back in action tomorrow, March 17, for the finale against Marshall. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
