The Chippewas are guaranteed three games in the exempt tournament, including New Mexico State in the first round November 24. Other participants are Southern Mississippi, UC Irvine, Murray State, San Francisco, Dartmouth and host Alaska Anchorage. The Shootout is the longest-running regular-season college basketball tournament in the nation, taking place every Thanksgiving in Anchorage since 1978.
"We feel very privileged to be part of such a prestigious preseason tournament," said head coach . "This gives us an opportunity to test ourselves during the non-conf season with some neutral site games and possibly playing in front of a hostile road crowd. For a young team, this is going to be a great experience culturally, educationally and athletically."
"We are pleased with the quality programs and competitive field we have assembled for 2011 Shootout," said UAA athletics director Dr. Steve Cobb. "There will be a great many storylines worth watching this fall. We are proud to host this Alaska Thanksgiving tradition for its 34th year."
The tournament counts as just one game on the Chippewas schedule, giving them 30 regular season games for the second consecutive season.
"Hopefully this will give us a barometer similar to last year's Rainbow Classic. Our vision has been to position ourselves in these exempt tournaments to showcase our program and compete at a national level," said Zeigler.
At Hawaii last year the Chippewas went 1-2, losing to Montana State in overtime and falling to the hosts by just three points.
