Twice during Darren Kohne's six seasons as assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Central Michigan he pieced together nationally-ranked recruiting classes that were regarded as the best in the Mid-American Conference.

For three straight years (2009, 2010 and 2011) and four times overall (2007), CMU's recruiting class was ranked atop the MAC by

Kohne coached several of his forwards to all-conference honors. In 2008-09, his efforts helped Marcus Van earn an All-MAC selection after Van led the league in overall rebounding and offensive rebounding while finishing second in blocks and third in field goal percentage. He also worked directly with 2007 MAC All-Freshman Team honoree Marko Spica.

Kohne also had responsibilities overseeing academics and equipment, coordinating the individual summer camp program and heading up booster/alumni relations including fund-raising.

Other Collegiate Experience
Prior to coming to CMU, Kohne spent three years as an assistant at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches, Texas. The Lumberjacks tallied a 21-win season in 2003-04 and were the conference runners-up. During his tenure, SFA held the nation’s longest active home court winning streak at 31 games.

The Lumberjacks had the Southland Conference’s top recruiting class in 2005, according to and various other publications. Kohne helped land Josh Alexander, the 2006 Southland Conference Freshman of the Year and 2008 Player of the Year, as well as Matt Kingsley, who was named the 2009 Southland Conference Player of the Year. The pair finished their careers as the top two scorers and rebounders in the school’s Division I history.

Kohne was an assistant at High Point (2002-03) and an administrative assistant at Bowling Green for two seasons (2000-02).

While at High Point, Kohne coached three all-conference performers, including Danny Gathings who was the only player in the country to lead his conference in scoring, rebounding and steals, and was named Big South Player of the Year in 2004. Kohne also recruited Issa Konare who was named the conference’s Defensive Player of the Year as a senior and is High Point’s all-time leader in blocked shots.

BGSU was 39-23 during Kohne’s two seasons, recording a 24-9 campaign in 2002 that included a postseason NIT appearance. Future NBA player Keith McLeod earned MAC Player of the Year honors that season.

Additional Experience
Kohne also has high school and AAU coaching experience. He was the head coach and director of the T-Town Boyz AAU program from 1993-2000. The 1998 squad won the NAYB national championship and a total of 10 players during his tenure went on to play at the collegiate level.

He was an assistant varsity coach at Notre Dame Academy (1998-99) and Bowsher High School (1999-2000) in Toledo. Five Bowsher players went on to collegiate careers, including former Toledo standout Keith Triplett.

Playing Career
Kohne began his college career as a player at Benedictine University in Lisle, Ill. During his one season (1996-97), the Eagles won a conference title and earned an NCAA Division III Tournament berth. Benedictine recorded a regular season upset over No. 1-ranked and eventual national champion Illinois Wesleyan.

He then transferred to Toledo where he earned a bachelor’s degree in business management (2000) and a master’s degree in business administration (2003). He was also a student manager at UT for the 1997-98 season.
