The Chippewas, which are ranked No. 24 nationally with a RQS of 195.810, will compete in the Columbus, Ohio regional against No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 LSU, No. 18 Arizona, host No. 20 Ohio State, and No. 31 North Carolina State on Saturday, April 6 at 6 p.m.
“I think it's a good position for us to be in,” said CMU head coach Jerry Reighard. “The fact that it is at Ohio State is a huge advantage for us. Last year, we traveled all the way to Seattle and that wasn’t a good situation. So, I think that’s a real positive.”
“The competition doesn’t really matter. If you get the number six and seven teams or the one and 12 teams, there is an eye blink difference between those teams regardless. You are not going to overlook anyone. But we are not traveling there to be fodder. I am not taking my team down there for the experience. We are beyond the experience.”
Last weekend, CMU claimed its fourth consecutive MAC championship, tying host Western Michigan for the title with a score of 194.800. Sophomore Halle Moraw, who earned Second Team All-MAC recognition, captured the floor exercise crown, scoring a career-high 9.950. Junior Brittany Petzold, a First All-MAC honoree, was named MAC Co-Gymnast of the Year following the meet.
Central Michigan has competed in the NCAA regionals a total of nine times during its program history. A year ago, the Chippewas finished in sixth place at the Seattle, Wash. regional, scoring a 194.150. CMU’s top regional finish took place in 2003 when it placed second with a score of 196.350.
The top two teams from the Columbus Regional will qualify for the 2013 NCAA Championships, which will be held from April 19-21 at host UCLA’s Pauley Pavilion in Los Angeles.
