MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan head coach Erik Olson announced the addition of four student athletes to the volleyball program Wednesday as a part of the National Early Signing Period.
Melissa Fuchs (Provo, Utah/Pleasant Grove), Andrea Gothard (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Earnest W. Seaholm), Jessica Meichtry (Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central) and Taylor Robertson (Midland, Mich./Midland) will join Olson and the Chippewas for the 2013 season.
"This class adds depth to the outside hitter, right side and defensive specialist positions," Olson said. "We lose three starters in those spots so we knew we had to secure a strong 2013 class who was ready to play. This is a very skilled class, but physical at the same time. They are a very talented group and haven't quite gotten the recognition they deserve as players. I hope they are prepared to show it on the court as Chippewas."
Below is the biographical information on the four newest Chippewas.
High School: Recorded 21 kills and was named All-Tournament MVP honors to lead Pleasant Grove to a 5A Utah state championship ... named to the 2012 All-American Under Armour Watch List ... 2012 Durango Fall Classic All-Tournament Team selection ... earned all-state honorable mention her junior season ... Coach Olson says: "Melissa is a passion player and an all-around outside hitter who can hit the ball with power and command. She is ready to pass at the collegiate level and has an extremely competitive spirit about her. She comes from a volleyball family (both her parents played professionally in Brazil) and knows the game very well."
Brookfield, Wis./Brookfield Central
High School: Helped lead team to three regional championships (2010, '11, '12) ... led team with 401 kills and 74 aces as a senior while hitting .383 ... named to the Greater Metro Conference Second Team ... selected to play for the Badger Region High Performance International team ... also played on the Region High Performance Youth National team ... helped lead softball team to conference championship in 2010, the program's first since 1979 ... WIAA DI state qualifier in the discus in track and field ... played club volleyball for the Milwaukee Sting ... chose CMU over Miami (OH), Akron and Eastern Michigan.
Coach Olson says: "Jessica has a big arm, very comparable to Kaitlyn McIntyre. She has the skills to pass and I believe will be a great heavy-armed outside hitter and eventually a six-rotation player. She has the ability to add depth to our outside hitter position right away."
High School: Named to the 2012 All-American Under Armour Watch List ... named All Region and led team to the stater quartefinals … earned 2012 Mattawan All-Tournament Team honors ... earned scholar athlete honors throughout her interscholastic career ... lettered all four years in volleyball ... named team captain her junior and senior season ... had a 700+ digs her senior year ... finished her career with 1,500 digs ... Coach Olson says: "Andrea brings outstanding quickness to the defensive specialist/libero position. She may be faster than Jenna Coates, which shows a lot of upside. I really like athletic defensive specialists and I believe Andrea brings athleticism along with a winning, passionate attitude and a great touch to the ball."
High School: Midland Daily News All-Area Dream Team her senior year, in addition to the All-American Under Armour Watch List ... named Saginaw Valley all-league her sophomore, junior and senior seasons ...earned all-academic honors her junior and senior season ... named all-region her junior and senior season ... led her team in points scored, kills, aces and digs her senior season ... finished her career with 1,028 kills, 218 career blocks and 147 aces ... named co-captain in volleyball her senior season ... lettered three times in volleyball and twice in track and field ... played for Oakland Elite Volleyball Club under coach Roly Roldan ... chose CMU over Michigan State, Notre Dame, DePaul, UCF and San Diego State.
Coach Olson says: "Taylor is a very talented player in this class. We found her as a middle and immediately thought she could play several positions. Her passing and defense have become one of her strengths and her block is huge. She has a huge arm and I can't wait for her to start swinging in the 80 to 95 percent range with control. She has a high desire to get better, which is what our program is all about."
