MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Mid-American Conference released its preseason coaches’ poll Wednesday afternoon, projecting the Central Michigan field hockey team to claim the MAC tournament title and finish third in regular season play.
The Chippewas received two votes for the conference tournament title along with Kent State. CMU ended their 2012 season with a 3-2 loss against the Golden Flashes in the semifinal of the MAC tournament.
“I think what the preseason poll showed today is there’s a lot of good teams in the MAC,” head coach Cristy Freese said. “We were picked to win the MAC tournament and I think it shows respect for our program and for how we play throughout a season. We tend to be on the top of our game at the end of the season. The top four teams are very close and it’s evident by the votes.”
The conference looks to be tough this 2013 season with the defending MAC champion Miami predicted to win the regular season title with two votes followed by Ohio and CMU, respectively.
For the 2013 season, the Chippewas welcome back 15 letterwinners and seven starters, including senior back Simone Lazar, junior back Jordyn Brengosz, senior forward Ellen Riley, and senior midfielder Skylar VanNatta. CMU ended the 2012 season 7-12, with a 3-3 mark MAC play.
The Chippewas will kick off the 2013 campaign home on Friday, Aug. 30 versus Robert Morris at 2p.m.
