MOUNT PLEASANT – The youth of the women's track and field team showed its potential and the senior veterans put in strong final Mid-American Conference Championship efforts to lead Central Michigan to a ninth-place finish at the 2012 Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday.

The Chippewas finished the three-day competition with 48 points, just behind Northern Illinois with 55.33. In a close two-way battle for the team championship that came down to the very last event, the 4x400m relay, Kent State claimed a narrow 134.33-132 victory over Toledo.

The Chippewas improved by one place over their 10th place showing at the Indoor Championships in February.

Freshman Bridget Doughty further improved on her career-best from Friday's preliminary rounds in the 400m hurdles with a third-place time of 59.92. Senior Stephanie Hurley also improved on her Friday career-best with a fifth-place time of 1:01.33 in her final MAC Championships, and sophomore Megan Heffner finished eighth in 1:04.21.

Sophomore Krista Parks finished fifth in the 5,000m run in 17:06.96. Seniors Holly Anderson and Raeanne Lohner finished sixth in 17:08.1 and seventh in 17:13.67, respectively.

Senior Kirlene Roberts finished seventh in the 100m dash finals in 12.08.

Junior Tamica Harbour crossed the line eighth in the 100m hurdles finals in 14.33.

Sophomore Shawntoreah Turk placed eighth in the 400m dash finals in 57.81.

As conference championships and last-chance meets conclude this weekend, the Chippewas will soon have a good idea who will qualify for the NCAA First Round competition in Jacksonville, Fla.,  beginning in just under two weeks.
