BATON ROUGE, La. - With a new school record in the hammer throw and eight Chippewas qualifying for the finals, including seven in the hurdles, the track and field teams turned in strong efforts in day one of the season-opening LSU Relays on Friday.
Senior Ryan McCullough won the hammer throw and broke his own hammer throw school record with a mark of 204-02. His previous record of 202-05 was set during the 2011 season. His marks the first record broken during the outdoor season, and the seventh broken this year including the indoor season.
Fellow senior Kevin Mays finished fourth in the hammer throw with a career-best mark of 194-09.
Pairs of Chippewas advanced to the Saturday's finals in the men's 110m hurdles and 400m hurdles, and the women's 400m hurdles. In the men's 400m hurdles preliminaries, senior Branden Post finished third in a time of 53.58 and sophomore Cory Noeker finished ninth in a career-best 54.50.
Two Chippewas are in the field for the men's 110m hurdles finals after Noeker finished fifth in the preliminaries with a time of 14.87 and junior Renaldo Powell finished eighth in 15.09.
Another pair of CMU student-athletes qualified for Saturday's finals in the women's 400m hurdles. Megan Heffner finished fifth in the preliminaries in a time of 1:03.25, while freshman Bridget Doughty finished seventh in 1:03.80. Doughty also qualified for the 100m hurdle finals after she finished ninth in the preliminaries in 14.82.
Freshman Milica Kulidzan finished fifth in the women's javelin with a mark of 142-03.
Freshman Diamond Hamilton made it to the finals with an eighth-place showing in the 100m dash preliminaries in a career-best time of 12.19.
Heffner finished finished 10th in the women's high jump with a mark of 5-03.
Senior jumper Kevin Bacon finished 11th in the long jump with a mark of 22-06.25.
Sophomore Ross Parsons was the top finisher in the men's 100m dash, finishing 18th in a time of 10.89.
