Hernandez, left, and Enns, right, played major roles on a Chippewa pitching staff that paced the MAC in ERA. It's the first MAC honor for both players.
MOUNT PLEASANT -- To the victor go the spoils, and the 2010 Mid-American Conference champion Central Michigan baseball team had several individuals earn high praise for their performance during the championship season.

Senior pitcher Jesse Hernandez became just the third Chippewa to earn MAC Pitcher of the Year recognition and freshman pitcher Dietrich Enns became the first player in CMU history to earn MAC Freshman of the Year honors.

In addition, first baseman Nate Theunissen, Hernandez and Enns earned first-team All-MAC recognition and sophomore Trent Howard earned second-team All-MAC honors for the second-consecutive season.

Hernandez paced the CMU rotation with a 6-1 MAC record, tied for the most wins in league play, and the third-best ERA among starting pitchers in league games at 3.48. The senior right-hander went 8-2 overall in 2010 with a 4.07 ERA and tossed a complete-game shutout against Eastern Michigan in the season's final weekend to help the Chippewas earn their 12th MAC championship. Hernandez needs just one win to become the 15th player in program history to win at least nine games in a season.

Enns led the MAC in conference ERA (1.23), batting average against (.168) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.82) with a 4-0 record. His 1.37 overall ERA ranks fifth in the nation and his 4.95 hits per nine innings leads the nation and helped him post an unblemished 6-0 record entering the MAC Tournament.

Theunissen is hitting .403 on the year and needs just two doubles to break CMU's single-season record. He leads the team in batting average, doubles, home runs (seven), extra-base hits (27) and RBI (51).

Howard ranked second in the league with five saves during MAC play. He finished the regular season with a 4-3 record and a 3.52 ERA. His 9.89 strikeouts per nine innings ranks 57th in the nation.

Its the 13th time CMU has had three or more players earn first-team recognition, the fifth time since 1990.
