Jonker & Borrelli Extended Through 2018

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan University Director of Athletics Dave Heeke has announced the contract extensions of softball head coach Margo Jonker and wrestling head coach Tom Borrelli through the 2017-18 seasons.

“I am excited to have both Margo and Tom add to their distinguished careers as Chippewas,” Heeke said. “We all look forward to many more years of their outstanding leadership for our student-athletes as we continue building a Championship Culture. I am committed to keeping these elite level coaches at CMU for the remainder of their careers.”

“Margo and her staff have built a championship program both on and off the field as witnessed by its Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship and top-five national ranking academically last season.  Tom’s ability to keep our program among the top teams nationally is a credit to his hard work and dedication to CMU.”

Jonker led CMU to its 10th MAC Tournament title in 2013 giving CMU its 13th NCAA Tournament berth. In 2013, she became just the 11th coach in Division I history to win 1,100 games and has a career record of 1,100-667-5. CMU earned the fifth-highest cumulative team grade point average in NCAA Division I for the 2011-2012 academic year with a 3.572, the highest ranking in program history.

During her 34 seasons at CMU, she has won 11 MAC Championships and coached 30 first-team all-region players, 44 academic all-conference first team picks and 77 All-MAC first-team selections. Her teams reached the national finals twice, the first was the 1982 AIAW Finals and the second was the 1987 Division I College World Series.

Borrelli guided CMU to its 13th MAC Championship in 2012-13 to go along with 14 titles at the MAC Championships. Last season saw Ben Bennett become the first four-time All-American for the Chippewas as CMU boasted multiple All-Americans for the ninth time in the past 10 seasons.

In 22 seasons with CMU, Borrelli has coached one national champion, 38 All-Americans, eight MAC Wrestler of the Year honorees, 80 MAC champions, 132 national qualifiers, eight NWCA All-Academic first-team selections, 40 Academic All-MAC first team selections and eight MAC Freshmen of the Year. Under Borrelli, CMU has earned 11 top 20 finishes at the NCAA Championships including a fifth in 1998 and a pair of sevenths in 1999 and 2008.
