Rochester, Mich. - Freshman Melissa Fuchs posted a double-double of 18 kills and 10 digs as Central Michigan rallied from down two sets for a come-from-behind five set victory over Villanova to close the Golden Grizzlies Invitational Saturday afternoon.
Fuchs led five Chippewas (1-2) in double figures kills as sophomore Angelique White and junior Kaitlyn McIntyre each had 15 kills and senior Danielle Gotham had 10. McIntyre also finished with a double-double in the contest, tallying 21 digs defensively.
The Chippewas fell in the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-21, before rallying in set three to extend the match and later earn their first win of the season. The Wildcats led as late as 22-21 in the third set before the Maroon and Gold rallied and claimed the set on back-to-back kills by White and McIntyre, 30-28.
CMU carried the momentum into the fourth set and hit .278 as a team to even the match behind a 25-15 set victory. McIntyre and Fuchs recorded eight and seven kills in the set to lead the Chippewas and senior Kelly Maxwell dished out 18 assists.
The fifth and decisive set was back and forth between the two squads, seeing 18 ties and eight lead changes. The Chippewas held match point following a kill by Fuchs, 14-12, but the Wildcats were able to score three straight points out of a timeout to take the lead, 15-14. A kill by White tied things up at 15 all and after Villanova evened the match at 18-18, Gotham and Fuchs slammed home back-to-back kills for a 20-18 set victory.
Maxwell finished the match with a season-high 58 assists while senior libero Jenna Coates led four players in double-digit digs with 25.
The Chippewas were swept in straight sets by Oregon State earlier in the day, 25-22, 25-21, 25-18. McIntyre led the way with 11 kills, while Maxwell dished out 32 assists.
CMU will be back in action next weekend at the Robert Morris/Duquesne Tournament where it will play the two host schools as well as Xavier.
