Chippewas Pickup Midweek Win over Oakland, 7-4

MOUNT PLEASANT - Central Michigan used a three-run sixth inning in its midweek tilt versus Oakland Wednesday en route to a 7-4 victory at Theunissen Stadium.

The Chippewas (13-18) held a 3-2 lead over the Golden Grizzlies (7-21) after five innings but gave up an unearned run in the top of the sixth to allow OU to even things up.

The tie game didn't last long however as the Maroon and Gold quickly went to work in the bottom of the frame to take back over. Sophomore Tyler Huntey walked to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position on a single by fellow sophomore Pat MacKenzie. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before freshman Logan Regnier laced a double in the left center gap to plate both runners and give CMU a 5-3 advantage.

Redshirt freshman Neal Jacobs roped a double of his own two batters later to push Regnier across and extend the lead to 6-3.

CMU extended its lead in the seventh when MacKenzie stole second and Drew Bechtel's throw skipped into the outfield allowing Huntey to score from third.

Oakland threatened in the top of the eighth when Jared Theisen walked to lead off the frame, later stole third and came around to score on a RBI single by Nolan Jacoby. With runners on first and second and just one out, Jacobs prevented any damage by making a shoe string grab in left field before gunning Robby Enslen out at second base for the double play.

The Chippewas fell behind in the top of the second on back-to-back RBI doubles by the Golden Grizzlies. Doug Beath recorded an infield single to to start the inning and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Spencer Marentette plated the first run of the game with a RBI double to right center and Connor Mielock followed with a RBI double of his own to give the Golden Grizzles a 2-0 advantage.

A single with one out by junior Noel Santos and a RBI double off the wall in right center by Huntey pulled the Chippewas within a run in the bottom of the frame and they were able to even things up in the bottom of the third thanks to OU mistakes.

Regnier and sophomore Pat MacKenzie went down quickly to start the frame before senior Jordan Adams drew a two-out walk and advanced to third when freshman Zack Fields reached on a dropped pop up. Adams came across on a RBI single to center field by sophomore Cody Leichman to give the home team a 3-2 lead.

Junior Kenton San Miguel picked up his first career win for the Chippewas, tossing 2.1 innings in relief. Sophomore Matt Trowbridge picked up his seventh save of the season by tossing a scoreless ninth.

Leichman went 2-for-4 with a RBI to lead the Chippewas, while Huntey was 1-for-1 with a pair of runss cored.

The Chippewas are back in action this weekend for a Mid-American Conference series in Muncie, Ind., versus West Division rival Ball State
