Program Win 2,000
The Central Michigan baseball team earned program win number 2,000 last Friday with its 4-1 victory over West Virginia. The Chippewas enter the weekend with a 2,001-1,219-17 (.621 winning percentage) record all time.
A Different Ball Game
After featuring one of the most powerful lineups in the MAC last season, the Chippewas playing a new brand of baseball this season thanks to its speed on the base baths. CMU already has just as many triples – nine – as it had all of last season and is just five stolen bases shy of its 2012 mark of 35. The squads nine triples rank ninth in the country, while their 30 stolen bases is good for 19th.
A FRESHman Face
True freshman Logan Regnier has found his spot at the top of the lineup for CMU and is producing in a big way through the first 15 games of the year. Regnier ranks fifth in the country with three triples, 20th with nine stolen bases and is batting a team-best .328 at the plate. The Novi, Mich., native has already recorded seven multi-hit games, including five in his last six appearances.
The Colony
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Jordan Foley of The Colony, Texas, has cemented himself as the Chippewas’ ace of 2013. Foley pitched his first career complete game last Friday at West Virginia to improve to 3-0 this season. He has allowed just three earned runs in four appearances for an earned run average of 0.99, which ranks 49th in the country.
Home Opener Postponed
The Chippewas were scheduled to play their first game at Theunissen Stadium this past Tuesday, but the game versus Madonna was postponed. CMU is scheduled to host Northwood next Tuesday at 3:05 p.m.
Marshall Series Now Four Games
A doubleheader will be played Friday versus the Thundering Herd, with single games on Saturday and Sunday. All four contests will be played at Linda K. Epling Stadium, home of the West Virginia Miners of the Prospects League.
Chippewas Tabbed MAC West Favorite
The Mid-American Conference preseason coaches’ poll was released on Feb. 12 with the Maroon and Gold earning 65 votes as the preseason favorite in the West Division. The Chippewas finished second in the MAC West last season with a 17-10 record, but advanced to the MAC Tournament Championship game where they fell to Kent State, 3-1.
Jaksa Puts Pen to Paper
Head Coach Steve Jaksa signed a new four-year contract during the offseason, taking the former CMU pitcher through the 2016 season. Jaksa has posted a 328-254-1 record during his time at CMU, leading the Chippewas to a pair of MAC titles (2004 and 2010).
