Foley Pitches Way to Top of MAC West
Sophomore Jordan Foley struck out a career-high eight batters in six innings of work last Friday at Western Kentucky, helping him earn his first career MAC West Pitcher of the Week honor. Foley currently is tied for the MAC league with 15 strikeouts in his first two appearances and has a posted a 0.69 earned run average.
New Faces Making Immediate Impact
A few new faces of the Chippewas are making an immediate impact, including true freshman Zack Fields and Logan Regnier. Fields and Regnier are tied for the MAC league with three doubles apiece and have appeared in all seven games. Regnier has also added a new element on the base paths, as he currently is tied for the MAC lead with three stolen bases.
Adjusting to Division I
After struggling with just one hit in his opening series in the Maroon and Gold, junior shortstop Noel Santos put together a .500 weekend at the plate at Western Kentucky. The Lincoln-Copiah CC transfer has started all seven games for the Chippewas at shortstop and is tied for the team lead with five runs.
Stetson a Familiar Foe
CMU trips to DeLand, Fla., have become an annual adventure as the Chippewas and Hatters have will square off for the seventh consecutive season. The Hatters lead the all-time series, 12-5, and took three of four from the Chippewas last season.
A week off from classes will allow the Chippewas to spend the next 10 days in the sunshine state, as they will play a total of eight games during that stretch. Following the Brighthouse Tournament, they will take on Bethune-Cookman twice before traveling to Port Charlotte, Fla., for the Snowbird Baseball Classic and matchups versus West Virginia, Chicago State and Georgetown.
Regnier Continues Hot Start
Sophomore center fielder Nick Regnier continued his torrid start to the 2013 campaign last weekend and is currently leading the Chippewas in average (.379), hits (11), runs (5), home runs (2), RBI (8), slugging percentage (.655) and total bases (19).
On the Road Again
CMU will begin its season in normal fashion as it will play its first 15 games of the season on the road before its home opener at Theunissen Stadium March 12. The Chippewas will travel approximately 6,560 miles and visit three different states - Louisiana, Kentucky and Florida - during the road trip.
Chippewas Tabbed MAC West Favorite
The Mid-American Conference preseason coaches’ poll was released on Feb. 12 with the Maroon and Gold earning 65 votes as the preseason favorite in the West Division. The Chippewas finished second in the MAC West last season with a 17-10 record, but advanced to the MAC Tournament Championship game where they fell to Kent State, 3-1.
Jaksa Puts Pen to Paper
Head Coach Steve Jaksa signed a new four-year contract during the offseason, taking the former CMU pitcher through the 2016 season. Jaksa has posted a 328-254-1 record during his time at CMU, leading the Chippewas to a pair of MAC titles (2004 and 2010).
