Chippewas Swept by Louisiana in Saturday Doubleheader

LAFAYETTE, La. - Central Michigan seemed poised to earn its first win of the 2013 season Saturday night at "Tigue" Moore Field, but four runs by Louisiana in the bottom of the ninth gave the Ragin' Cajuns a Saturday doubleheader sweep and series victory.

The Chippewas (0-3) were unable to take advantage of sophomore Jordan Foley's gem or the three runs they scored in the top of the ninth as the Ragin' Cajuns' (3-0) Ryan Leonards singled to left field with the bases loaded for the walk off 5-4 win.

With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the ninth, an error on the Cajuns allowed Alec Ornelas to reach and junior Noel Santos singled to push Ornelas to second. Both runners advanced on a failed pickoff attempt and freshman Logan Regnier recorded her first career triple down the right field line to plate both runners and give CMU a 3-1 lead.

After sophomore Nick Regnier was intentionally walked to put runners on the corners with one out, senior Jordan Adams singled through the middle to bring the younger Regnier across the plate.

Sophomore Dylan Rheault, who replaced Foley to start the eighth, hit the leadoff batter in the ninth and gave up back-to-back singles to allow Louisiana to pull within 4-2. Fellow sophomore Sean Renzi came on to try to get out of the jam, but a bases-loaded walk cut the Chippewas' lead to just one and Leonards plated the winning runs in the next at bat.

Renzi suffered the loss for the Chippewas as Foley's seven innings of one-run ball in which he struck out seven resulted in a no decision.

Game One
Despite outhitting the Louisiana, the Chippewas left nine on base and were unable to overcome an early deficit in losing the doubleheader opener, 5-3.

The Chippewas had an early scoring chance when sophomore Pat MacKenzie walked with one out and later advanced to third, but senior Jordan Adams struck out to end the inning.

The Ragin' Cajuns struck first off senior starter Pat Kaminska with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and Tyler Girouard extended the lead to 3-0 with a solo home run to start the second.

CMU started to rally in the top of the fourth when Adams, sophomore Cody Leichman and redshirt freshman Neal Jacobs hit consecutive singles to load the bases. Freshman Zack Fields flew out to left to drive in Adams and sophomore Tyler Huntey drove in Leichman with a RBI groundout in the next at bat to pull the Chippewas within one, 3-2.

Louisiana displayed its team speed in the bottom of the sixth, scoring two runs on a single sacrifice fly. After a single by Jace Conrad and double by Michael Strentz, Chace Compton flew out to deep center and both players raced home to push the lead to 5-2.

Fields recorded a RBI double in the second-straight game to pull the Chippewas within a pair of runs in the top of the eighth and CMU pushed the tying run to the plate in the ninth, but a groundout by sophomore Nick Regnier ended the game.

The Chippewas and Cajuns will conclude their series tomorrow at "Tigue" Moore Field at noon.
