Tale of the Tape CMU News and Notes

Who Will Step Up?
Despite returning 15 letter winners, the Chippewas will have to replace a large chunk of its’ offensive production from a season ago. CMU returns just 33 percent of its run scored (129 of 386), 34 percent of its hits (206 of 605), 27 percent of its home runs (11 of 40) and 27 percent of its RBI (91 of 341).

Welcome to the Maroon and Gold
CMU’s roster features 22 players who will be looking to make their Maroon and Gold debut. The roster features 13 true freshman, four redshirt freshman and five junior college transfers.

“Big Cat”
Senior Jordan Adams will be key to the Chippewas having offensive success this season as he is the only position player on CMU’s roster with more than one year of CMU experience. Adams led the Chippewas with 16 doubles last season and was named to All-MAC Tournament team last season.

Senior Citizens
A pair of veteran pitchers will get starts in the opening series as righty Pat Kaminska will throw game one Saturday and lefty Rick Dodridge will start the series finale. Kaminska went 5-4 in his first season with the Chippewas after transferring from John A. Logan College, while Dodridge was named to the MAC All-Tournament Team last season after throwing a complete-game shutout in the semifinals versus Miami.

Brotherly Love
The Chippewas outfield will feature a special connection in 2013 as third-year sophomore Nick Regnier will be joined by his younger brother, Logan Regnier. Nick started 47 games for the Chippewas in his redshirt-freshman season, while Logan joins the Chippewas as the No. 10 prospect in the state of Michigan coming out of high school.

On the Road Again
CMU will begin its season in normal fashion as it will play its first 15 games of the season on the road before its home opener at Theunissen Stadium March 12. The Chippewas will travel approximately 6,560 miles and visit three different states - Louisiana, Kentucky and Florida - during the road trip.

Chippewas Tabbed MAC West Favorite
The Mid-American Conference preseason coaches’ poll was released Tuesday with the Maroon and Gold earning 65 votes as the preseason favorite in the West Division. The Chippewas finished second in the MAC West last season with a 17-10 record, but advanced to the MAC Tournament Championship game where they fell to Kent State, 3-1.

Give Yourself a Pat on the Back
Third-year sophomore Pat MacKenzie returns at second base for the Chippewas in 2013 after starting 43 games last season. It was MacKenzie’s play that helped spark a turnaround for the Chippewas last season as the sophomore hit a team-high .408 in conference play and posted a .516 on-base percentage in 20 MAC games.

Jaksa Puts Pen to Paper
Head Coach Steve Jaksa signed a new four-year contract during the offseason, taking the former CMU pitcher through the 2016 season. Jaksa has posted a 328-254-1 record during his time at CMU, leading the Chippewas to a pair of MAC titles (2004 and 2010).

Sensational Sophomores
Sophomore pitchers Sean Renzi, Dylan Rheault, Jordan Foley and Matt Trowbridge will be leaned upon to continue the success that has been displayed on the mound in recent years at CMU. Trowbridge will make the opening day start for CMU, while Foley will pitch game three of the series Saturday evening. Renzi and Rheault may be one of the most lethal combinations in the country as the righties struck out a combined 19 batters per nine innings pitched last season.
