MOUNT PLEASANT - Freshman reliever Sean Renzi has been named the final Mid-American Conference West Division Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Sunday afternoon.
Renzi (Plainfield, Ill./Plainfield North) was lights out coming out of the bullpen in the Chippewas' final week of regular season play, appearing in all four games. The right hander did not allow a run in his four appearances, finishing the week with five strikeouts in 5.1 innings pitched. He did not allow a single hit in the three-game series versus rival Western Michigan and pitched a perfect inning of work in the series finale to earn his first collegiate win and clinch the No. 3 seed for the Maroon and Gold in the upcoming MAC Tournament.
The freshman has thrived in his relief role, allowing just one run over his last 10 appearances - 15.1 innings pitched - for a earned run average of just 0.59. He finished MAC play 1-0 with a perfect 0.00 ERA in seven appearances, striking out nine in 7.2 innings pitched.
The Chippewas kick off the MAC Tournament Wednesday afternoon at 12:30 inside All Pro Freight Stadium in Avon, Ohio when they take on No. 6 seed Eastern Michigan. CMU is seeking its third MAC Tournament title in program history and its first since 1995.
