MOUNT PLEASANT - The Mid-American Conference announced Monday junior pitchers Zach Cooper and Trent Howard have been named to the 2011 Academic All-MAC baseball team.

Howard earns the honor for the second time, while Cooper is a first-time Academic All-MAC selection.

Cooper (Hartland, Mich./Hartland HS) posted a 5-2 record and 2.95 ERA in conference play in 2011. An All-MAC second team honoree, Cooper was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week May 17 after tossing a complete-game one-hitter in a 3-0 win at Western Michigan. In the 2011 Major League Baseball Draft, Cooper was selected by the Florida Marlins in the 46th round.

Howard (Hammond, Ind./Clark HS) boasted the best ERA (2.78) and opponent batting average (.234) and had the most strikeouts (96) for the Chippewas this season. His 96 strikeouts are the eighth most in a season in CMU history. An All-MAC second team selection, Howard was named MAC West Pitcher of the Week twice during the 2011 campaign. The left-handed pitcher was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the seventh round of the 2011 MLB Draft and signed with the club last week.

The Academic All-MAC honor is for a student-athlete who has excelled in athletics and academics. To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50% of the contests for that particular sport.
