Maroon Salvages Opening Weekend with 13-10 Victory

Mount Pleasant, Mich - On the verge of falling behind 3-0 in the annual Fall World Series and trailing, 4-0, the Maroon squad scored 13 runs over two innings Sunday afternoon to earn a 13-10 victory and pull within a game of the Gold squad.

The Gold came out and took a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the second and third innings before the Maroon finally hit its stride thansk in part to errant pitching by the Gold. 

The Maroon sent 13 batters to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, scoring eight runs on just two hits and a pair of errors on the Gold squad. Freshman Colton Bradley opened the frame with a double, but the Maroon went on to draw five walks and two hit by pitches to help the rally. 

The trend continued in the bottom of the fifth as the Maroon sent 10 men to the plate to score five runs. Redshirt freshman Alex Borglin walked with one out to begin the rally and put himself in scoring position with a stolen base. A double by sophomore Logan Regnier drove Borgin across the plate and after another steal by Regnier, he came across on a single by sophomore Neal Jacobs.

Sophomore Dylan Goodwin drove in ap air of runs with a single later in the inning and junior Tyler Huntey capped the scoring with a single of his own that pushed Bradley across.

The Gold attempted to mount a comeback with a pair of runs in each the fifth, seventh and eighth innings, but junior closer Matt Trowbridge, who had nine saves last season, came in and pitched the final 1.1 innings to secure the win for the Maroon.

THe annual Fall World Series at Theunissen Stadium will continue Tuesday afternoon at 2:45.
