MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan field hockey team gained six Academic All-Mid-American Conference team selections, the league announced Wednesday.
"The field hockey program has been very successful with its academics and we ended the semester with a team GPA of 3.61," head coach Cristy Freese said, "These six girls have truly shown what a student-athlete means."
Lazar, a chemistry major with a 3.57 GPA, is a three-time Academic All-MAC honoree. She was also named the 2013 Dick Enberg Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Finishing out her CMU field hockey career as a back, she added another All-MAC First Team selection to her awards list. Lazar assisted the Chippewas to a 1.77 goals against average in the 2013 season, which was good for second in the MAC.
VanNatta, a business major with a 3.73 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second time in her career. The senior midfielder was recently awarded Longstreth/NFHCA All-Region Second Team honors. She also earned a spot All-MAC Tournament team and is a two-time All-MAC First Team selection and MAC Offensive Player of the Week.
McKeon, a communication disorders major with a 3.80 GPA, is also a second-time honoree for the Academic All-MAC team. The senior forward added an All-MAC Second Team selection to her resume after the 2013 season. One of her highlights in the 2013 season was scoring off a stroke in the semifinal game against Kent State, leading the Chippewas to the MAC Championships.
Brengosz, an actuarial science major with a 3.91 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the second-time in her career. As a back, the sophomore became one of the Maroon and Gold’s leading scorers – completing the 2013 season with six goals, one assist, and 13 points.
Gregory, an undeclared major with a 3.80 GPA, adds her first Academic All-MAC honors to her resume. She tallied three goals and four assists into the stat book, including a game-winning goal in a 2-1 overtime victory over UC Davis in the beginning of the 2013 season.
Middeldorp, an undeclared major with a 3.66 GPA, earns Academic All-MAC honors for the first time in her career. In her first season, travelling over from the Netherlands, she received All-MAC Second Team honors and a spot on the All-MAC Tournament Team.
