MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The Central Michigan University women have earned the 2012-13 Mid-American Conference Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Academic Achievement Award, the conference office announced on Wednesday.
The FAR Awards are designed to recognize the conference institution with the overall highest grade point average rank by gender. CMU has been honored with this prestigious award in two of the last three academic seasons and for the third time in the last six years.
"We take great pride in the academic success of our student-athletes," said CMU Director of Athletics Dave Heeke. "It is great to see their hard work in the classrom acknowledged. I also want to congratulate our coaches and academic staff for the their efforts in continuing an expectation of academic excellence."
Female student-athletes at Central Michigan had the highest overall GPA rank in the MAC, including carrying the highest conference GPA in field hockey (3.561) and ranking second in softball (3.571).
The FAR Award is the culmination of an outstanding academic year for the CMU women. The field hockey team was recognized by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) as having the highest Division I grade point average in the nation. The soccer squad earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for the 13th consecutive year and senior Bailey Brandon was named the 2012 recipient of the Dick Enberg Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. The softball program was honored for its academic excellence with a Public Recognition Award from the NCAA.
The conference FARs worked with the Athletic Academic Advisors to compute an award that best represents the academic achievement of student-athletes in a competitive setting. Using the same ranking method as the long-time Reese and Jacoby trophies (traditionally awarded to the best overall male and female athletic programs in the MAC), the FAR Awards are given to those institutions male and female programs with the highest overall GPA rank points within the conference. Only MAC sponsored sports are used.
