Softball Drops Two on Second Day of Cardinal Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Central Michigan softball team came up short both games on Saturday, falling to Eastern Kentucky (3-0) and Louisville (3-2) on the second day of the Cardinal Classic.

The Chippewas (7-6) started off the day in a rematch against Eastern Kentucky (6-6) but struggled offensively only earning one hit throughout seven innings.

Both teams remained scoreless into the fourth inning until the Colonels took a 1-0 lead from a RBI double to left field.

The Maroon and Gold tried to rally back but came up short as EKU added two more runs in the seventh inning to secure the 3-0 victory over CMU.

In the second game of the afternoon CMU fell to host Louisville (7-6) after giving up three runs in the seventh inning.

The Chippewas jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning after Evelyn Lorimer cranked a solo shot to left field. The homerun was the sophomore’s second of the season, the first coming Friday against Northern Kentucky.

In the seventh inning CMU added one more run from Kristen Kuhlman after taking advantage of a Cardinals’ wild pitch to give the Chippewas a 2-0 lead.

In a final attempt to score, the Cardinals entered the bottom of the seventh down two runs but were able to rally back in a three hits, three run inning to lift itself past the Chippewas in a 3-2 win.

The Maroon and Gold committed two crucial errors at shortstop and first base giving Louisville the opportunity to capitalize. A double to left field brought in two, tying the game at 2-2. At the next at-bat, Louisville had another double bringing in the winning run from second base.

Central Michigan will wrap-up the Cardinal Classic tomorrow against IUPUI at 10 a.m.
