MOUNT PLEASANT - Junior midfielder/back Skylar VanNatta has earned Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors, the league office announced Tuesday.
VanNatta's game-winning assist against Ohio and overtime-forcing goal against No. 20 Michigan State were crucial contributions to the Chippewas taking control of the MAC Regular Season Championship race at 3-1 in the league.
VanNatta assisted on the game-winning goal Friday against Ohio in a 2-1 OT win to give the Chippewas a 3-1 conference record, tied for first. After holding a potent Ohio offense to just one goal in regulation, the Chippewas earned a penalty corner in the sixth minute of overtime on which VanNatta received the initial pass and made a perfect connection to teammate Jordyn Brengosz on the near post for the game-winning goal.
She was instrumental in sending the Chippewas into overtime against No. 20 Michigan State on Sunday with a goal just before halftime. VanNatta and the CMU defense kept the Spartans off the board in the second half to force overtime. The goal was the first of her career.
VanNatta is the second player to earn MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors in 2012, joining senior midfielder Erin Dye as the other recipient.
The Chippewas will look to clinch the MAC Regular Season Championship when they host Kent State Saturday at noon.
