The winningest baseball coach in Central Michigan history, Dean retired after the 1998 season with a record of 516-282-4 and a winning percentage of .646... took teams to the NCAA regionals seven times in 14 years, including four straight from 1985-88... his 1988 team won a school-record 47 games (47-15)... was a CMU assistant coach for 14 seasons under Dave Keilitz when the Chippewas went 456-203 (.692)... an outstanding pitching coach who was an expert on the pick-off move, often being asked to speak at national conventions on the topic... three of his players (Kevin Tapani, Shawn Hare, Lee Gardner) reached the major leagues... was active in coaching youth baseball... coached at several international venues... played baseball for the Chippewas in the late 1950s.
