DeKALB, Ill. - Central Michigan won its third-straight Mid-American Conference Championships crown and 13th in program history Saturday, scoring a season-high 195.675.
The Chippewas entered the final rotation on the floor needing to score a 48.800 or better to top Kent State, which had already completed its day with a score of 195.225. They did just that and more, scoring a season-best 49.225, with all five gymnasts topping 9.8 or better.
Senior Kristin Teubner led the way, scoring a 9.925 to claim her second-straight MAC floor title, while freshman Halle Moraw scored a 9.850 to finish tied for fifth. Sophomore Brittany Petzold scored a 9.825 in the final rotation to clinch her first MAC all-around championship, edging Kent State's Marie Case, who scored a 39.025.
The Chippewas (21-6) had the momentum from their first rotation, getting a career-best 9.900 and first-place finish from sophomore Meaghan McWhorter on the vault. CMU recorded four scores of 9.8 or better in the event to hold the lead through one event with a 49.125.
CMU scored a 48.650 on the uneven bars to hold a lead after two events with a team score of 97.775 and held on through three events with a 146.450.
The Colorado connection of freshman Taylor Noonan and Teubner finished the beam tied for first to each earn first-team All-MAC honors in CMU's third event of the day, each scoring a 9.825.
All together, the Chippewas finished with individual titles in three of the four events in addition to Petzold claiming the all-around with a score of 39.150.
In addition to the results on the day, Teubner was named MAC Senior Gymnast of the Year and head coach Jerry Reighard was named MAC Coach of the Year for the ninth time in his career.
By outscoring the six MAC opponents in the meet, the Chippewas also extended to 34 their consecutive streak of wins over MAC foes.The Chippewas entered the day ranked 38th in the nation in regional RQS, needing to move up two spots to No. 36 to qualify for the NCAA Regionals. Final rankings will be announced Monday morning to determine whether their season continues as a team.
