Kickoff Set for Football Season Opener Versus Michigan

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — Central Michigan football’s 2013 season opener against in-state rival Michigan will kick off at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31 at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor. The Chippewas’ fourth-ever meeting with the Wolverines will be broadcast to a national television audience on the Big Ten Network (BTN).

Central will be facing Michigan on the gridiron for the first time since 2006. All three of the previous meetings between CMU and UM, with the earliest dating back to 1931, have taken place at the Wolverines’ famed “Big House.”

A year ago, CMU garnered the national college football spotlight in a game televised on the BTN. The Chippewas put together an epic, late-game rally to knock off Iowa at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, scoring nine points in the final 45 seconds to stun the Hawkeyes, 32-31. The win was the program’s fifth all-time over a Big Ten opponent.

The highly anticipated clash with Michigan is the third CMU game scheduled to be broadcast nationally in 2013. The Chippewas will take on Ball State in Muncie, Ind., on Wednesday, Nov. 6 (8 p.m.) on ESPN2 while the regular season finale versus Eastern Michigan on Friday, Nov. 23 in Mount Pleasant will be shown on ESPNU or ESPN3. In 2012, nine Central Michigan football games were aired nationwide, including the Chippewas’ 24-21 victory over Western Kentucky in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl.

Central Michigan returns a core group of key players to lead the Chippewas in 2013, including All-MAC running back Zurlon Tipton and wide receiver Titus Davis, the team’s leading rusher and receiver a year ago, and the team’s top two tacklers in linebackers Justin Cherocci and Shamari Benton. In February, CMU bolstered its roster by adding a second consecutive highly ranked recruiting class.
