Freshman Nate Ghena and senior Emily Dienhart led the Chippewas in day one of the 2013 MAC Outdoor Championships. Ghena finished seventh in the 10,000m race with a time of 31:22.35, while Dienhart currently sits in sixth after four events of the heptathlon, two of which involved personal-best marks.
MAC Championships: Chippewas Start Strong on Day One

AKRON, Ohio - On the first day of the 2013 Mid-American Outdoor Championships, the Central Michigan track and field came out with a strong start. Heading into day two the women’s team is in seventh, while the men’s is in sixth.

Freshman Kyleigh Young threw for a huge personal best of 152-07, giving her a fourth-place finish, scoring five points for the team. Sophomore Milica Kulidzan joined Young on the stand in sixth place, scoring three team points, with a throw of 138-04.

In the men’s javelin, freshman Brandon McCleese finished ninth with a throw of 177-05.

After the first day of the multi-events, senior Emily Dienhart sits in sixth place with 3091 points. She ran a personal-best 25.11 in the 200m race and threw a personal-best in the shot put, 37-08.75. Freshman Shaya Wilkerson currently sits in eighth place, 2875 points, in her first heptathlon. Junior Tim Reynolds currently holds 10th place in the decathlon with 3369 points. On Friday, the heptathlon will conclude with long jump, javelin and the 800m run. The decathlon will conclude with the 110m hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and the 1500m run.

Freshman Nate Ghena scored the only points for the men’s squad on the day with a seventh-place finish in the men’s 10,000m race. Ghena’s time of 31:22.35 helped him earn two points for the team.

Junior Krista Parks ran a strong 10,000m race to finish out the night, finishing in fifth place with a time of 36:31.97, earning four points for the team. Sophomore Breanne Lesnar finished in ninth with a time of 37:37.79.

Friday’s events will start at 10 a.m., including the conclusion of the multi-events, finals for men’s hammer, men’s and women’s shot put, men’s and women’s steeplechase and men’s and women’s long jump, and trial races for the running events.
