Mount Pleasant, Mich.- Central Michigan opens up Mid-American Conference play on Friday, March 29, at Eastern Michigan. The Chippewas currently rank second in the MAC West Division with 12 wins.
Central Michigan (12-10) has not faced any other team more times than the Eagles (9-12-1). The Chippewas lead the all-time series 72-30-1. Last season, Central Michigan swept Eastern Michigan in a two-day home stand, 5-1 and 10-2. The last time the Chippewas traveled to Ypsilanti, April 6, 2010, they came away with two victories in a doubleheader, 5-3 and 7-1.
Sophomore Carol Ann Sexauer has stepped up at the plate, leading the team with 17 RBIs and 10 extra base hits. She currently ranks sixth in the MAC with a .353 batting average and t-fourth with seven doubles.
Seniors Macy Merchant and Summer Knoop have been key contributors for Central Michigan, both hitting over .300 this season. Merchant leads the team with 26 hits, t-eighth in the MAC. With a .356 batting average this season, she is on pace to crack the top five in program history. Merchant has already made her mark on the record books, currently eighth all-time with 56 stolen bases. Knoop has batted in 15 runs this season, already ahead of the mark she set last season at this time. In 22 games, she has 22 hits, including four doubles.
The Chippewas’ pitching staff leads the MAC heading into conference play with a 2.34 ERA. The four pitchers have combined for a an opposing batting average of .247, second in the MAC, and are third in the conference in hits allowed. All four currently rank in the top 12 for ERA in the conference, three of which are in the top six.
Senior Kara Dornbos continues to make her mark on Central Michigan softball ranking top-ten in program history in six categories. She currently has a 2.11 ERA, and has pitched seven complete games this season and two shutouts.
Junior Chelsea Sundberg leads the team with 43 strikeouts this season and ranks among the top pitchers in the conference in strikeouts, saves and ERA.
The Eagles are led by Amanda Herron at the plate, hitting .352 and has batted in 10 runs. Amanda Stanton leads the team with 12 RBIs and has two homeruns through 20 games. Jenna Ignowski has pitched 49.2 innings in the circle, giving up 73 hits and holds an ERA of 5.22.
Game one of the series is schedule for Friday, March 29, at 2 p.m. Game two will be played on Saturday, March 30, also at 2 p.m.
