Petzold Named MAC Gymnast of the Week
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Junior Brittany Petzold has been honored as MAC Gymnast of the Week in recognition of her standout performances in Central Michigan’s home dual meet with Alaska Anchorage and road tri-meet versus No. 24 Maryland and Yale last week. For Petzold, the conference award is the third of her career.

Petzold joins sophomores Halle Moraw and Kylie Fagan as recipients of MAC honors in 2013. Moraw and Fagan were named MAC Specialist of the Week on January 9 and February 6, respectively.

Competing twice in the span of four days last week, Petzold won a total of four titles, including the all-around crown in CMU’s win over Alaska Anchorage. Versus UAA on Thursday, Petzold totaled a 39.125 in the all-around, placing first in the uneven bars (9.850) and the floor exercise (9.850). Against Maryland and Yale, Petzold finished in second place in the all-around with a 39.225 total. She also won her second uneven bars title of the week and third consecutive, scoring a 9.850.

Petzold has been a key figure in CMU’s line-up thus far in 2013 and will continue to be as the Chippewas pursue their fourth consecutive and 14th overall MAC Championship. Battling through injuries early in the season, she has come on strong of late. Over the last six meets, the reigning MAC all-around champion has earned 15 top three finishes, including 11 total title wins. Petzold owns the top all-around score in the MAC this season, a 39.400, attained in a win over Bowling Green on March 2.

This weekend, CMU hosts MAC rival Eastern Michigan on Senior Day. The Chippewas will clash with the Eagles in their regular season finale on Sunday at 2 p.m. in McGuirk Arena. Seniors Kari Dieffenderfer, Emily LaFontaine, and Meaghan McWhorter will be honored for their career contributions in a special ceremony following the meet. Saturday’s competition is also the annual Flip for the Cure meet. The team will wear pink t-shirts, which will also be for sale in the McGuirk atrium, with proceeds going to the battle against cancer.
