Chippewas Post Personal Bests at Akron Invitational

AKRON, Ohio – The Central Michigan track and field program continued to post qualifying marks for the MAC Indoor Championship this weekend at the Akron Invitational.

The men and women raced well in the 400-meter run automatically qualifying four student-athletes for the MAC meet.

“I thought the athletes that competed did a great job and are continuing to move forward,” director of tack and field Mark Guthrie said. “I saw great progress with their efforts.” 

On the women’s side, senior Shawntoreah Turk led the way with a first place, personal best finish in a time of 53.98. Teammate Bridget Doughty placed sixth, crossing the finish line in 56.05.

The men’s squad was led by sophomore Ziemowit Dutkiewicz finishing in second place with a time of 47.83. Senior Clay Holman posted a fifth place finish with a time of 48.38.

Junior Kyle Allinder ran to a second place finish in the 800-meter run in a time of 1:51.54. Allinder’s mark automatically qualifies him for the MAC Indoor Championships.

Sophomore Shaya Wilkerson placed fourth in the triple jump with an automatic qualifying mark of 39-08.75 (11.80m).

Senior speedster Renaldo Powell placed second in the 60-meter hurdles matching his career-best time of 7.91.

The Chippewas took advantage of the unique opportunity to compete in the discuss indoors. On the women’s side, the Maroon and Gold earned the second and third place spots from Devene Brown and Kyla Walworth. Brown posted a second place mark with a throw of 163-11 (49.97m) while Walworth finished third with a mark of 140-09 (42.90m).

Senior Alex Rose placed first in the discuss on the men’s side boasting a throw of 179-03 (54.63m). Teammate Cole Walderzak placed third with a mark of 165-05 (50.42m).

Rose went on to mark a double personal record in the shot put and weight throw. The senior bested his throw in shot with a 57-01.00 (17.40m) toss. In the weight throw Rose placed second with a mark of 61-00.75 (18.61m).

Sophomore Matt Mueller was another Chippewa to qualify for the MAC meet, posting a mark of 6-08.75 (2.05m) in the high jump. Mueller’s mark earned him a second place overall finish.

The Chippewas will travel to Allendale, Mich. next weekend to compete in the Grand Valley State Big Meet Elite Friday and Saturday.
