AKRON, Ohio - The Central Michigan track and field squad wrapped up the 2013 Mid-American Conference Championship on Saturday, May 11.
While upperclassmen highlighted the Chippewas' outing at the championships, underclassmen provided a bulk of the points. The Chippewas had 11 freshmen (8 men, 3 women), seven sophomores (3 men, 4 women), nine juniors (5 men, 4 women) and four seniors (2 men, 2 women) score through out the meet. The CMU men’s team finished sixth overall, while the women finished seventh.
Junior Parker Scott led the Chippewas as the only MAC Champion. He rounded the final curve of the 400m hurdles trailing two opponents but pulled head on the straightaway. After qualifying for the finals with a time of 52.17, Scott crushed his previous personal record with a time of 51.77 to earn the gold and a first team All-MAC honor. Scott is the third Chippewa to win the 400m hurdles in the last four seasons.
Senior Renaldo Powell also ran a career-best on the final day. Powell ran 14.06 for a second-place finish in 110m hurdles. He was bested by .01 seconds by the winner.
Freshman Devene Brown took third in the women’s discus with a mark of 163-6.
Earning fifth place finishes were freshman Cole Walderzak, sophomore Bridget Doughty and junior Sam Stein. Walderzak threw for 164-06 in the men’s discus, Doughty ran 1:00.72 in the women’s 400m hurdles and Stein cleared 5-05 in the women’s high jump.
In the men’s 1500m race, freshman Anderson Lee race a personal best time of 3:56.63, finishing eighth.
Seniors Maddie Ribant and Nathan Sanchez were able to help earn points for their teams in their final MAC Championships. Sanchez finished eighth in the men’s 800m race with a time of 1:55.84 while Ribant took seventh in the women’s 5000m race with a time of 17:03.63. Junior Krista Parks also placed in the women’s 5000m, earning eighth with a time of 17:08.22.
After his second-place finish in the 3000m steeplechase on Friday night, sophomore Ethan Lievense took sixth in the men’s 5000m race with a time of 14:46.50, scoring three team points.
The men’s 4x400 relay team of junior Clay Holman, freshman Clinton Cargill, junior Andrew Barrett and junior Parker Scott took sixth in a time of 3:17.18, while the women’s 4x400m relay team of Bridget Doughty, Emma Fishnick, Rayvn Baxter and Shawntoreah Turk took seventh with a time of 3:46.34.
The Chippewas finished the 2013 Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships with one first place winner, two second place and five third place finishes.
Regional qualifier declarations open Tuesday at 8 p.m., and the qualifiers will be posted Thursday at 1 p.m.
