Senior Nathan Sanchez and sophomore Bridget Doughty contributed to the success that the Chippewas had this past weekend. Sanchez won the 800m race at the Toledo Collegiate Challenge with a time of 1:54.13, while Doughty won the 400m hurdles at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational with a time of 1:01.46.

Grand Rapids Open

Grand Rapids, Mich - In smashing fashion, freshman Devene Brown broke the school record in the discus this weekend at the Grand Rapids Open, hosted by Aquinas College. The old record of 162-5 stood little chance versus Brown’s throw of 168-04. This was also a new personal record and a MAC qualifying mark.

"The season is still early, yet crucial at the same time, in regards to meet preparation. We had some solid performances this weekend, led by Devene Brown with a new school record. However, we still have a lot of work to do, and are focused on that as the weeks continue on," said director of track and field Willie Randolph of the weekend's results.

Taking second and fourth behind Brown were sophomore Kyla Walworth and senior Kayla Brindley, respectively. Walworth threw a mark of 149-09 while Brindley threw for a new personal-best of 146-07.

Freshman Cole Walderzak won the hammer throw with a mark of 173-11, a personal best. Taking third was junior Calvin Jackson with a mark of 172-11.

Walderzak also competed in the discus, finishing second with a mark of 163-08.

Toledo Collegiate Challenge

Toledo, Ohio -  The Central Michigan track and field squad sent a majority of its athletes to the Toledo Collegiate Challenge hosted by the University of Toledo this weekend.

The men’s distance squad led the way controlling the 1500m race. Five Chippewas scored in the top eight, led by junior Ben Wynsma who finished first with a time of 3:56.67. Sophomore Ethan Lievense finished second in with a time of 3:57.65. Finishing fifth was freshman Anderson Lee with a time of 3:59.11, in seventh was freshman Monte Scott, 3:59.81, and in eighth was junior Nathan Huff, 4:00.49.

In the 800m race, senior Nathan Sanchez finished first with a mark of 1:54.13. Sophomore Davis Nixon finished eighth with a time of 1:57.93.

Rounding out the success in the distance races, senior Tanner Pesonen took fourth in the 5000m run with a time of 15:27.33.

Junior Parker Scott finished sixth in the 400m hurdles with a time of 55.04.

Freshmen Dee Smith and Craig Mauldin finished fourth and sixth, respectively, in the long jump. Smith finished with a mark of 22-04.5, while Mauldin finished with a mark of 21-08.25.

Mauldin also finished third in the triple jump with a mark of 46-00.75.

On the women’s side, junior Shawntoreah Turk finished fifth in the 400m race with a time of 57.28.

In the women’s 4x100m race, Markala Goodson, Kelsey Ritter, Olivia Shelton and Diamond Hamilton ran a time of 48.95, finishing eighth.

Texas Relays and Texas State Bobcat Invitational.

Austin, Texas and San Marcos, Texas - On Thursday, at the Texas relays, sophomore Bridget Doughty ran a 1:01.5 in the 400m hurdles, finishing 22nd of 85. In a quick turn around, Doughty competed at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational on Friday. She ran the 400m hurdles in 1:01.46 and won.

Senior Renaldo Powell also competed at the Texas relays. His time of 14.59 in the 110m hurdles gave him a 25th place finish out of 41 competitors. Powell turned around to race two hours later at the Bobcat Invitational where he won the 110m hurdles with a time of 14.34, a new personal best.

Competing in the heptathlon at the Texas State Bobcat Invitational, senior Emily Dienhart scored a personal-best 4,573 points. She finish top 10 in five of the seven events, including third place finishes in the high jump (5-03.6) and the 200m dash (25.34).
