MOUNT PLEASANT – Junior thrower Alex Rose, a 2011 All-American in the discus, has proven his mettle at the national level, and will now take his talents international at the 2012 Oceania Area Championships in Cairns, Australia, on Wednesday and Thursday.

Rose will represent his father's home country of Somoa in the competition, which will be the first international meet of his career. He will be competing for a potential berth to the 2012 Olympics in London.

“It's going to be a great opportunity to compete against new opponents on an international level and meet new people,” Rose said.

The 2012 Mid-American Conference Champion in the discus will compete in the discus and the shot put.

The discus begins Wednesday at 3 p.m. local time and 1 a.m. EST.

The shot put will begin Thursday at 2:50 p.m. local time and 12:50 a.m. EST.
