Holds the school record in the discus (197-2)
Started as an assistant for the CMU men's and women's track and field teams in 2011 and currently holds that position.
2010 (Outdoor Track and Field): Qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the discus, where he finished 10th with a throw of 178-8 … finished runner-up in the discus (182-3) at the NCAA East Region prelims … won the discus with a season-best throw of 187-3 at the MAC Outdoor Championships … also took fifth in the hammer throw (187-3) at the conference meet … placed on the Academic All-MAC team.
2010 (Indoor Track and Field): Tossed a season-best 56-4 to finish seventh in the weight throw at the MAC Indoor Championships.
2009 (Outdoor Track and Field): Earned All-America honors in the discus (183-4) … academic all-MAC selection … named to the USTFCCCA All-Academic team … won the discus (183-9) and finished runner-up in the hammer throw (189-2) at the MAC Outdoor Championships … finished runner-up and broke the school record in the discus (197-2) at the NCAA Mideast Regional … named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week and MAC Field Athlete of the Week after throwing a then school-record 191-1 in the discus at the Len Paddock Invitational … also named MAC Field Athlete of the Week after winning the discus at the Mt. SAC Relays (183-9) … threw a career-best 192-3 in the hammer throw at the dual meet against Eastern Michigan.
2009 (Indoor Track and Field): Scored at the MAC Indoor Championship in the weight throw (58-5 1/4) … threw a season-best 58-11 1/2 in the weight throw at the Chippewa Open.
2008 (Outdoor and Indoor Track and Field): Took an Olympic redshirt while training for Team Canada … placed third in the discus (177-1) and ninth in the hammer (177-9) at the Canadian Olympic Trials.
2007 (Outdoor Track and Field): Scored with a sixth-place finish in the discus (172-2) at the MAC Outdoor Championships … NCAA Regional qualifier in the discus … won the discus (176-1) at the Len Paddock Invitational at Michigan … finished third in the discus (166-9) at the Hillsdale Relays.
2007 (Indoor Track and Field): Tossed a season-best 43-7 1/4 in the shot put at the Red Simmons Invitational.
2006 (Outdoor Track and Field): Scored in two events at the MAC Outdoor Championships, taking third in the discus (167-3) and eighth in the hammer throw (168-10) … NCAA Regional qualifier in the discus … won the discus at both the CMU Triangular (167-0) and the Len Paddock Invitational (170-0) … took sixth in the discus (169-4) at the prestigious Sea Ray Relays … placed second in the hammer throw (159-6) at the CMU Triangular.
2006 (Indoor Track and Field): Had three top five finishes in the shot put indoors – at the Chippewa Open (fourth; 47-1), the EMU Triangular (fifth; 46-5 1/4) and the Jack Skoog Open (fifth; 46-4).
High School— Lettered in track, hockey, football, wrestling and volleyball at Sir Frederick Banting Secondary School … national discus champion … member of 2001 Canadian Pan Am Junior team … third best discus toss in Canadian history … twice OFSAA discus champion and twice national silver medalist in discus.
Career Bests— Discus (197-2); hammer throw (192-3); javelin (174-0); shot put (48-6).
Personal— Parents are Robert and Judy Pilling … married his wife, Elizabeth, on June 25, 2005 … she is a CMU graduate … brother, John, was also a thrower at CMU … has a son, Daniel Aiden Pilling, who was born Dec. 28 2008 … graduate student who received a bachelor’s in sport studies in May.
