The Chippewas traveled to Wichita Falls, Texas, for the Pioneer Bowl - the Division II national championship semifinal with CMU handing Louisiana Tech a 35-14 defeat to advance to the national championship game.
The Chippewas advanced to the bowl game after defeating Boise State, 20-6, in regional action.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Chippewas scored quickly in the second on a Walt "Smoke" Hodges 1-yard run. The Chippewas then scored an additional four unanswered touchdowns, including two by Dick Dunham. The CMU defense also stepped up forcing seven turnovers (six interceptions and a fumble). The Bulldogs finally got on the scoreboard with 9:45 left in the game. Louisiana Tech scored on a 5-yard TD pass and then added a TD run four minutes later.
Mike Franckowiak was named the Offensive Player of the Game while Rick Newsome earned the defensive honor.
