Better known as "Doc," Sweeney served Central Michigan first as a student-athlete and later as a teacher/coach... he lettered in football, basketball and track for three years, graduating in 1931... captained the 1930 football team... served as CMU's frosh team line coach in 1933 prior to a six-year prep coaching career at St. Joseph and Saginaw high schools... returned to Central in 1939 and was the Chippewas' line coach until 1953, twice turning down the head coaching position... founded the CMU gymnastics team, traveling his squad throughout the state to host clinics and promote CMU... two of his football products, Warren Schmakel and Ken Loop, were Little All-America linemen... started the City of Mount Pleasant Recreation Program.
