Mount Pleasant, Mich — Central Michgan senior Jenna Coates has been named the Mid-American Conference West Division Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday afternoon.
The award is the first of the season for the senior libero and the fifth of her career after earning MAC West Defensive Player of the Week honors four times as a junior.
Coates displayed why she was chosen as a preseason All-MAC selection over the weekend at the Duquesne/Robert Morris Tournament. Coates locked down the Chippewas’ defense and posted 20-plus digs in all three matches of the tournament, including 28 versus both Duquesne and Robert Morris. The senior finished the weekend averaging 6.33 digs per set and had a perfect serve receive percentage, handling all 49 attempts with perfection. Coates also chipped in on the offensive side, dishing out 16 assists over the weekend.
CMU is back in action this weekend at the Hofstra Tournament and will play South Carolina Upstate Friday at 4:30 p.m. to open the tournament.
