Field Hockey Unveils 2013 Schedule
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Central Michigan field hockey head coach Cristy Freese has announced the Chippewas’ schedule for the 2013 season. The schedule features matches against seven teams that finished in the top 25 in the final 2012 NFHCA poll, including four that qualified for the NCAA postseason.

“Our 2013 schedule is challenging as usual and we are excited to start the season off with a tournament at home,” said Freese. “I certainly feel our non-conference schedule will prepare us for MAC competition. It will be a challenging road, as we will play the top MAC schools on the road. It will be important to win our MAC home games and be ready to compete and win on the road as well. It will be a tight MAC race and I think we can contend for the regular season championship. Miami and Kent State should be very strong as well but you really cannot count anyone out.”

The Chippewas will open the 2013 season in Mount Pleasant, hosting a tournament featuring non-conference opponents Robert Morris and Saint Louis. CMU will face the Colonials on August 30 (2 p.m.) and then the Billikens on September 1 (1 p.m.).

The following weekend, CMU will make its first road trip of 2013, traveling to Newark, Del. for matches against host Delaware and defending Patriot League champion Lafayette. The Chippewas will take on the Blue Hens on September 6 (2 p.m.) and the Leopards on September 7 (12 p.m.).

CMU will remain on the road for its next competition, visiting Iowa City, Iowa for matches against two teams that made NCAA tournament appearances a year ago. The Chippewas will meet Iowa on September 13 (4 p.m. ET) and Stanford on September 14 (3 p.m. ET).

The Chippewas’ September road journey continues when it plays New Hampshire (1 p.m.) and Maine (1 p.m.) on September 21 and 22, respectively, in Orono, Maine.

After wrapping up play in September with a 1 p.m. non-conference, neutral-site match against UC Davis in Muncie, Ind. (1 p.m.) on the 27th, CMU will return home to begin MAC play against Ball State. The alumni weekend match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on October 5.

MAC competition will continue on October 12 when the Chippewas clash with Kent State on the road at 12 p.m. On the 13th, CMU will face Big Ten power Michigan in Ann Arbor at 1 p.m.

On October 19, Central will travel to Athens, Ohio for a match with MAC foe Ohio. Three days later on the 22nd, CMU will be on the road again, meeting Michigan State in East Lansing for a 3 p.m. game.

The Chippewas will return home a final time in the 2013 regular season in late October for parents weekend. On the 26th, CMU will face Missouri State at 1 p.m. and then wrap up its home schedule on the 27th  (12 p.m.) versus Northwestern on Senior Day.

The 2013 regular season finale will take place on November 2 (12 p.m.) at defending MAC tournament champion Miami (Ohio).

The 2013 MAC Tournament, which is scheduled for November 8-9, will be hosted by Miami in Oxford, Ohio.

CMU is coming off a 7-12 season, which included a 3-2 mark in MAC play, good enough for a third place finish in the conference standings. The Chippewas’ 2012 season ended with a narrow 3-2 loss to Kent State in the semifinals of the MAC Tournament.
