Central Michigan at Toledo: Postgame Quotes

Head coach Dan Enos
Q: Your thoughts on the game?
A: Well, we didn’t like the way it finished, obviously. We cut it to a one-possession game several times. In the fourth quarter when we made it 40-35, I thought we had a good chance if we got a three and out, we had two timeouts left, and if could have some time on the clock, we could get a score.  But the big thing was the interception for a touchdown. That killed us. The guy made a good play. We will have to see on tape what happened. I thought at times we played very, very well. We had a lead early and then fought back in the third quarter. We did some good things. But you have to give credit to Toledo. They did a good job finishing.

Q: Your thoughts on the defense?
A: I thought the defense battled against a very good offense. You take the last interception out and then other one; I thought they did a good job. They got some pressure. They gave us a chance to get a lead early. And, like I told the team, there were some good things from everybody. The offense did some good things. We needed to get a stop when it was 40-35 and we didn’t.  We needed to make them punt and that time. We have to look at that and find a way to get better.

Q: Can you talk about the 4th-and-1 play?

A: It was disappointing. Again, we have to go back and look at the tape. But against an offense like that, you just can’t keep punting and keep punting. We had the ball in their territory and it was 4th and 1.  We have a big back and a good offensive line and everybody on our sideline wanted to go for it. You have to do that in those types of games. You can’t keep playing conservatively and the ball was on their side of the field. Your defense needs to step up and get a stop.

Q: You have a four-game home stretch coming up, how nice will it be to be at home again?
A: We are 2-3. We are not where we want to be. But when we looked at the schedule and saw Michigan State, Iowa, Northern Illinois, and Toledo, with three of them on the road, we knew this was going to be a tough stretch. We don't make excuses and we don’t talk to the team about that. We have to regroup and come back. Now we have Navy on a short week. There is no time to feel sorry for yourself. We have to figure out how to the play the option in two days. But we will get right back at it.  This group of guys we have, I love them. I told them that after the game. They are great young men. They work very hard. They do everything we ask. And we are getting better.
