With the showdown with Michigan in Ann Arbor looming just 26 days away, the Chippewas took part in the first of 21 preseason practices mid-afternoon, working out at Kelly/Shorts Stadium for just over two hours in shorts, jerseys and helmets. This morning, the players participated in conditioning testing.
“We had great energy and the condition test this morning went outstanding,” said head coach Dan Enos, who is in his fourth season at CMU. “We’re at good health right now and there is a lot of competition this year. For the first day, it went very well.”
One position that remains unsettled as preseason camp gets underway is quarterback. The three-way battle for the starting spot got off to a good start on day one, according to Enos.
“They all got the same amount of reps today. They all, at some point, looked really good. I’ll have to look at the film, but I thought Cody Kater looked really good. He was really good in the two-minute drill. Alex Niznak looked good. Cooper Rush had some moments too. They’re all very focused. Coach Watts has told me in the last 24 hours how they have all responded in meetings and they know what is at stake. As I keep telling them, whoever wins the job is going to have earned it.”
The Chippewas will practice one more day in shorts and then will wear shells (helmets and shoulder pads) for the following two practices. Full-padded practices will begin on Friday while the first two-a-day taking place on Saturday. The first of two preseason scrimmages is scheduled for Sunday.
