MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – Fourteen practices are in the books. The teams and coaching staffs have been selected. The stage is set for the 2013 Central Michigan Spring Football Game presented by Little Caesars. The game, which will pit the Maroon vs. Gold, is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start on Saturday at Kelly/Shorts Stadium. Admission is free.
Fans can follow all the action on the radio on the Fabiano Brothers Central Michigan IMG Sports Network, with Don Chiodo, Brock Gutierrez, and Justin Hoff providing the call.
On Wednesday morning, the team came together to draft players to fill the rosters for the two squads. The seniors were divided between the two teams, then drafted their teammates by position, beginning with the offensive line. The draft’s No. 1 overall pick for the second consecutive year was center Nick Beamish, who will play on the Gold team. The other top picks by position were Leterrius Walton (defensive linemen), Anthony Garland (running backs), Andrew Flory (wide receivers), Mike Kinville (tight ends), Cody Kater (quarterbacks), Jason Wilson (defensive backs), Justin Cherocci (linebackers), and Ron Coluzzi (specialists).
Director of Operations Plas Presnell, who is in his 31st season on staff at Central Michigan, will serve as honorary head coach of the Gold team. He will observe as Butch Barry (offensive coordinator), Kyle Nystrom (defensive coordinator), Mike Cummings, and Archie Collins call the offensive and defensive plays and instruct the Gold players.
The honorary head coach of the Maroon team will be former Chippewa great Jim Schulte. A three-year letterwinner, he set the CMU single season record for tackles in 1973 with 151. In 1977, Schulte became a full-time assistant coach at CMU and was with the program for 26 years. Morris Watts (offensive coordinator), George Ricumstrict (defensive coordinator), Mose Rison, Joe Tumpkin, and Guido Guidugli will do the on-the-field coaching of the Maroon squad.
Prior to the Spring Game, the Central Michigan football team will host a free kids clinic for children 12 years or younger. The clinic will last from 11-11:45 a.m., with registration beginning at 10 a.m.
Kids will have the opportunity to receive instruction from CMU players and staff, tour the locker room, and run out of the inflatable football helmet prior to the clinic. An autograph session will be held from 10:30-11:00 a.m., during which kids can try on CMU football jerseys and shoulder pads.
Registration, the autograph session, and the try-on station will take place in the turf bay of the IAC. The kids clinic will be held outdoors at Kelly/Shorts Stadium, weather permitting.
In the 2012 Spring Game, the Maroon team held on late for a 49-48 victory over the Gold squad.
