MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan wrestling program has been ranked 12th in Division I and six individual have been ranked in the top 25 of their respective weight classes in the preseason d1collegewrestling.net poll released Monday morning.
Senior Scotti Sentes garnered the highest preseason ranking of any Chippewa from the publication, being ranked as the No. 2 133-pounder behind defending national champion Logan Strieber of Ohio State. Sentes, a two-time All-American, is returning to the Maroon and Gold lineup after taking a redshirt last season.
Senior Jarod Trice, also a two-time All-American at 285 pounds, was ranked as the No. 3 heavyweight in the country after taking an Olympic redshirt last season. Three-time All-American Ben Bennett was picked No. 5 at 184 pounds to give the Chippewas three individuals in the top five.
Three more NCAA qualifiers from last season were picked in the top 25 of their respective weight class, as junior 125-pounder Joe Roth ranks 19th, sophomore 165-pounder Mike Ottinger ranks 19th and junior 141-pounder Scott Mattingly 24th.
The Chippewas were picked No. 12 in the publications preseason poll as a team after finishing 24th at last year's NCAA Championships in St. Louis, Mo.
CMU will open the regular season November 6 when it hosts in-state rival Michigan at 7:30 p.m. The Wolverines were picked No. 18 as a team in the preseason poll.
