Chippewas Handed First MAC Loss by No. 10 Northern Iowa, 25-14

Cedar Falls, Iowa - The Central Michigan wrestling program was handed its first Mid-American Conference loss of the season at the hands of No. 10 Northern Iowa Saturday evening, 25-14.

The Chippewas (6-4, 2-1 MAC) claimed four matches - two by major decision - but an early 15-0 deficit and a pair of pins by the Panthers (4-0, 2-0 MAC) was too much to overcome.

The Panthers claimed two highly anticipated matches to start the night as No. 7 Dyland Peters defeated CMU's No. 13 Corey Keener by decision at 125 pounds and second-ranked Joe Colon claimed a 7-2 decision over No. 15 Joe Roth at 133.

A pin of Tyler Keselring by No. 15 Joey Lazor at 141 extended the lead to 12-0 and CMU trailed 15-0 before sophomore Lucas Smith gave the Chippewas their first victory of the night.

Smith grabbed a first-period lead on a takedown with just 29 seconds remaining before escaping to start the second to extend the lead to 3-0. He was able to accumulate 2:17 of riding time on Zach Witte to claim a 4-0 decision.

Sophomore Mike Ottinger scored bonus points for the Maroon and Gold at 174 pounds as the No. 15 ranked grappler led 5-1 after two on a pair of takedowns and an escape before two more takedowns and a riding time of 1:29 helped secure the major decision, 11-3.

Junior Craig Kelliher also earned a major decision at 184 pounds over Kyle Lux, 12-2. Kelliher scored a takedown in the first, but a pair of locked hands calls squared things up through the first period, 2-2. The senior escaped to start the second, scored a takedown and then two back points to extend his lead to 7-2. Kelliher scored another takedown and back points in the third while accumulation 1:13 of riding time.

Sophomore Jackson Lewis posted the final victory of the night for CMU, defeating Basil Minto by decision, 5-4. Lewis fell behind 2-0, but was able to score an escape and takedown in the second period to claim the lead. An escape by Minto with just 18 seconds left in the second and another to start the third put Lewis in a hole, but the sophomore scored a late takedown with just 16 seconds remaining in the match for the come-from-behind win.

CMU is back in action next Friday when it takes on Ohio inside McGuirk Arena at 7 p.m.
