CMU Splits with Iowa State and Virginia Tech to Wrap Up NWCA Duals

Columbus, Ohio - The Central Michigan Wrestling program wrapped up the NWCA National Duals Monday afternoon, defeating No. 18 Iowa State, 19-18, before falling to No. 16 Virginia Tech, 22-15.

The Chippewas advanced to the consolation semifinals by upsetting the 18th-ranked Cyclones behind key victories by sophomores Zach Horan and Lucas Smith as well as junior Mike Ottinger

With the match tied through the first two matches, Horan earned a takedown with just under 30 seconds left in the first period before turning Gabe Moreno to his back to earn CMU six bonus points with the fall.

Smith continued his dominance at the National Duals with a 2-0 decision over John Nicholson to give CMU a 12-6 advantage and Ottinger picked up a 4-3 decision over No. 8-ranked Tanner Weatherman.

After a scoreless first period, Ottinger started the second on bottom and quickly earned an escape before pushing his lead to 3-0 with a takedown at the 57 second mark. An escape just before the end of the second put Weatherman within a pair, 3-1, but after choosing bottom to start the third he was unable to shake Ottinger's grasp, allowing Ottinger to accumulate enough riding time to secure the victory.

Senior Craig Kelliher sealed the upset for the Chippewas with his third victory of the duals, earning a 14-6 major decision over Boaz Beard.

The Chippewas battled back and forth with the Hokies of Virginia Tech in the consolation semifinal before eventually falling, 22-15.

Roth and Horan both capped a perfect 4-0 stretch over the two days with decisions at 133 and 141 pounds, while Smith capped a tremendous weekend with a fall.

Smith led Sal Mastriani in the second period, 3-0, before earning the pin to give CMU a 12-6 lead. Smith went 4-0 over the two-day tournament and did not allow a single point to his opponents. He outscored his opponents by a combined score of 25-0 with two major decisions and a pin.

The Chippewas held a 15-9 lead following a 10-5 decision by Ottinger over John Dickson, but the Hokies' upper weights closed the match with three-straight wins to complete the comeback.

Nick Vetterlein pinned Kelliher at 184 to even the match, 15-15, before Chris Penny earned a close 3-1 decision over sophomore Jackson Lewis to put VT ahead, 18-15.

Ty Walz completed the comeback for VT with a 14-6 major decision over sophomore Adam Robinson

The Chippewas will conlude the regular season this Saturday when they host in-state foe Michigan State at 2 p.m.
