MOUNT PLEASANT - The Central Michigan cross country program will host the 27th Annual Jeff Drenth Memorial 5K Cross Country Open, the lone home meet of the season, at Pleasant Hills Golf Course Friday, Aug. 31 at 10 a.m.
The men’s open 5K begins at 10 a.m., followed by the women’s open 5K at 10:45 and an awards ceremony at 11:40 a.m.
The meet is free to spectators, and parking is available at the golf course.
The meet is dedicated to the memory of Jeff Drenth, a former CMU distance running great and Olympic hopeful who died unexpectedly in 1986 at the Athletics West headquarters in Eugene, Ore., where he was running professionally and training for the Olympics. Drenth was an All-American in cross country and a two-time MAC Champion in 1982-83.
The 2012 Jeff Drenth Memorial marks the 30th anniversary of his first individual MAC Championship and the first team MAC Championship in program history in 1982, and also the 2002 MAC Championship team, of which current cross country assistant coach Matt Kazor was a member. The 2002 team featured All-Americans Tristen Perlberg and Jake Flynn, and was the first of three consecutive MAC Championship teams.
