Keno Davis Earns One-Year Contract Extension
MOUNT PLEASANT – Central Michigan Director of Athletics Dave Heeke announced on Monday that men’s basketball head coach Keno Davis has signed a one-year extension.

Davis’ contract will now run through the 2017-18 season. Financial details of the contact remain the same.

“Extending Keno’s contract was important as we continue to build on stability that he and his staff have brought to our program,” Heeke said. “Keno has done a fantastic job building our program the right way and you can see that on and off the court. He and his staff should be commended for the hard work and patience they have shown with our program over the past 18 months."

In his first season, Davis led a rebuilt Chippewas squad with eight new players to seven non-conference wins, the most since 2002-03. It was also just the second time in the last 25 years CMU has reached that mark.

Davis’ first season also saw a pair of players honored by the Mid-American Conference. Senior guard Kyle Randall led the MAC in scoring, averaging 18.7 points per game against conference opponents, en route to earning Second Team All-MAC and NABC All-District recognition. Chris Fowler set the program record for a freshman with 176 assists, which also ranks third all-time in single season history, securing him a spot on the All-MAC Freshman team.

“It’s a testament to the hard work of our assistant coaches to recruit student-athletes who succeed and exceed expectations on the court and in the classroom,” Davis said.

Davis’ stress on work ethic translated into the classroom in his first year. CMU was one of only 19 NCAA Division I schools to receive the Team Academic Excellence Award from the National Association of Basketball Coaches, which recognizes outstanding academic achievement by a team with a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better. During the 2012 fall semester the team combined for a 3.15 GPA, its best semester in a decade, and, individually, Zach Saylor was named to the Academic All-MAC team for the 2012-13 season.
