Kaczor Looks to Youth to Help Pace Chippewas at Spartan Invitational

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. – The men’s and women’s cross country team will travel to East Lansing for the Auto Owners Spartan Invitational on Friday for their second meet of the season.

Forest Akers East Golf Course on the campus of Michigan State will play host to the meet, which begins with the women’s 6k at noon, followed by the men’s 8k at 12:35 p.m.

Central Michigan, Michigan State and Western Michigan women’s squad will be competing at the Division I level on Friday. A handful of institutions will compete at the Division II and III level and a series of high school races will follow the collegiate meet.

The Chippewas and Spartans will meet for the second time this season. The teams competed at the season-opener Drenth Memorial on Aug. 30.

“What I’m really trying to see in these first two meets, the Drenth and Spartan Invitational, is which student-athletes can step up and help our upper classmen,” head coach Matt Kaczor said. “I’m trying to give the younger guys the opportunity to try and solidify their spots onto the roster. That’s what I’m trying to see, is where the future of this team and where the depth of this team is through these first two meets.”

Senior Krista Parks is coming off a runner-up performance at the Drenth Memorial in August after finishing behind winner Rachele Schulist of Michigan State.

Sophomore Nate Ghena is looking to lead the men’s squad on Friday after boasting a 5k personal-best 15:48 at the Drenth Memorial.
