Tale of the Tape CMU News and Notes

Rheault, Rheault, Rheault Your Boat
Sophomore Dylan Rheault will make his first start of the season Thursday when he takes the mound versus Murray State. Rheault pitched primarily out of the bullpen last season, making just two starts, but struck out just under 10 per nine innings pitched.

Regnier Bash
Sophomore Nick Regnier came out swinging in the Chippewas’ season opener last Friday, smashing two home runs and driving in five RBI versus Louisiana. Regnier doubled his home run total from a year ago and through just one series is only three RBI shy of passing his mark from 2012.

Welcome to the Park
The Chippewas had 12 players made their CMU debut last weekend, including three pitchers and nine position players. The group included five true freshman, three redshirt freshman and four junior college transfers.

For the First Time
Senior Randon Henika, a junior college transfer from Jackson CC last season, hit his first home run in the Maroon and Gold last Sunday with a three-run bomb in the series finale. The home run capped a five-run first inning for the Chippewas en route to the 10-2 victory.

A New Home for the ‘Big Cat’
Senior Jordan Adams took his place at a new position last weekend, starting the first three games of the series at third base. Despite a pair of errors, the transition didn’t hurt his bat as he picked up right where he left off last season, hitting .444 with a home run and three RBI in the opening series. Adams solo home run in the series finale help the Chippewas claim a 10-2 victory.

Grandpa Dodge
As the oldest member on the team, senior Rick Dodridge has been given a unique nickname in his senior season. The senior did exactly what seniors should do in the opening series however, pitching six strong innings and striking out four to help CMU earn its only win at Louisiana.

Run, Run, Run
After stealing just 35 bases all of last season, the Chippewas displayed a new weapon on the base paths last weekend. CMU was successful on 10 of its 12 attempts stealing, which featured true freshman Logan Regnier going a perfect 3-for-3 on the weekend.

Leaders of the MAC
After a week of play, plenty of names sit atop the leaderboards in the MAC statistically, including Jordan Adams (hits), Nick Regnier (home runs, RBI, total bases), Zack Fields (doubles) and Logan Regnier (triples and stolen bases).

On the Road Again
CMU will begin its season in normal fashion as it will play its first 15 games of the season on the road before its home opener at Theunissen Stadium March 12. The Chippewas will travel approximately 6,560 miles and visit three different states - Louisiana, Kentucky and Florida - during the road trip.

Chippewas Tabbed MAC West Favorite
The Mid-American Conference preseason coaches’ poll was released on Feb. 12 with the Maroon and Gold earning 65 votes as the preseason favorite in the West Division. The Chippewas finished second in the MAC West last season with a 17-10 record, but advanced to the MAC Tournament Championship game where they fell to Kent State, 3-1.

Jaksa Puts Pen to Paper
Head Coach Steve Jaksa signed a new four-year contract during the offseason, taking the former CMU pitcher through the 2016 season. Jaksa has posted a 328-254-1 record during his time at CMU, leading the Chippewas to a pair of MAC titles (2004 and 2010).
