Season Preview Part One: On The Mound

Editors Note: This is the first of a three-part series previewing the 2013 Central Michigan baseball program. A preview on the infield and catchers will be released on Wednesday, February 6.

MOUNT PLEASANT - Much of the success of the Central Michigan baseball program in recent years can be credited to its pitching staff.

The 2013 version of the Maroon and Gold should be no different as the Chippewas feature a very talented and deep staff led by senior ace Pat Kaminska.

The Chippewas have had four pitchers selected in each of the last two Major League Baseball Drafts and Kaminska will look to build on the success he had as a junior that helped lead CMU to a MAC Tournament championship game.

Kaminska joined the Chippewas' weekend rotation at the start of conference play a year ago and went on to finish MAC play 4-2 with a 3.59 ERA in seven starts. The 6-3, 215 pound right-hander went on to make two starts in the MAC Tournament, including the MAC Championship game on two days rest, tossing 9.2 innings total and posting a 1.86 ERA.  Kaminska went 5-4 overall with a 3.05 ERA and 42 strikeouts in 73.2 innings.

Senior Rick Dodridge and sophomores Jordan Foley and Matt Trowbridge are expected to join Kaminska in the starting rotation in the opening weekend at Louisiana Lafayette in just 11 days.

Dodridge pitched arguably the best game of his career in his last appearance of the 2012 season, tossing a complete-game shutout versus Miami to send the Chippewas to the MAC Tournament championship game. The fifth-year senior is a former 30th-round drat pick of the Kansas City Royals and has appeared in 36 games during his time with the Maroon and Gold, making 32 starts.

Foley and Trowbridge each earned three wins as a true freshmen a year ago and are just a pair of pieces that make up a very talented sophomore class. Fellow sophomores Sean Renzi and Dylan Rheault will be leaned on to hold down the back end of the bullpen as both pitchers have the ability to strike out batters at a high rate.

Similar to Dodridge, Renzi pitched his best down the stretch for the Chippewas last season. The Plainfield, Ill., native did not allow an earned run over his final six appearances - 9.1. inning - and struck out a season-high four batters in back-to-back appearance in the MAC Tournament.

Rheault struck out just under 10 batters per nine innings in his redshirt freshman season, going 2-2 with a 4.43 ERA in 17 appearances. The 6-9 righty struck out a season-high seven batters twice and came out of the bullpen to throw 4.1 innings and earn the win in the first semifinal contest versus Miami in the MAC Tournament.

The Chippewas welcome back junior Scott Marinier to the bullpen after the right hander missed all of 2012 due to injury. Marinier appeared in 14 games as a sophomore and went a stretch of five-straight games without allowing an earned run.. Fellow junior Kenton San Miguel will also help bolster the bullpen from the left side after appearing in five games last season.

CMU features nine new pitchers to its staff in 2013, including true freshmen Adam Aldred, Matt Constance, Jason Gamble, Taylor Lehnert, Jimmy McNamara and Ryan O'Shea, redshirt freshmen Blake Louscher and Marc Jaksa and junior college transfer Joe Ucho.

The highly touted Ucho joins the Chippewas after spending last season with Prairie State College where he went 5-4 with 66 strikeouts in 60.1 innings pitched.
