MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich.- As spring quickly approaches, the Central Michigan softball team has begun preparing for the 2013 campaign. With the first game two weeks away, the Chippewas can be found indoors under the guidance of Coach Margo Jonker. In her 34th season at the helm of the Chippewas, Jonker looks to capture the program’s 12th Mid-American Conference title.
Central Michigan is returning 14 letter winners from a season ago, including senior outfielder Macy Merchant. Merchant led the Chippewas last season with a .350 batting average and ranked fifth in the MAC with 63 hits.
“I have high expectations for the team and myself,” said Merchant. “We have been working hard and putting in the extra effort to be where we want to be. As a senior I need to be a leader and I am ready to take on that role.”
Central Michigan will open up against Bradley on February 15 at the Lobo Classic in New Mexico. It will be the first of five games the Chippewas play in a three-day span.
“We are very excited to say the least,” Merchant said. “We have been cooped up a little too long so we are ready to get outside and show our hard work.”
A new addition to the Central Michigan roster is freshman infielder Katelyn Rentschler. One of two out of state players for the Chippewas, Rentschler comes to Mount Pleasant from Etiwanda, Calif.
“It is definitely an adjustment coming from sunny California but once you get used to it, it isn’t that bad,” said Rentschler.
